This work is a mixed-media installation composed of video, sound, and fragrance, exploring the sexuality of plants and the human body.
 
The installation consists of three elements:
“Breeding Institution”: A video and sound piece that sonifies the potential changes caused by the artificial pollination of figs, represented as a simulated voice.
“Enamor”: A fragrance designed to evoke the scent that attracts fig wasps.
“Ficus Brutalia”: A sculpture of a mutant fig with animal blood vessels embedded in its subcutaneous tissue.

The fig, which serves as the motif for this work, has long been depicted as a symbol of reproduction and sexuality. In the Old Testament, it was used by Adam and Eve to cover their genitals after being expelled from paradise. In African mythology, the latex sap of the fig tree is likened to semen and used in infertility treatments.

However, the fig varieties currently cultivated in Japan have been selectively bred to not require pollination for maturity, as the specialized wasp, Blastophaga psenes, which facilitates pollination, cannot survive in Japan’s climate. (A fig's edible part is composed of numerous small folds, each of which is a flower, and originally, wasps enter these folds to pollinate.)

The artist performs a form of sexual rehabilitation (artificial pollination) on these figs and interprets the invisible phenomena occurring within their bodies as “plant sexual ecstasy”. By documenting this through video and sound, the artist aims to reframe the physicality and sexuality of plants, traditionally viewed solely through their utility as crops, as autonomous experiences.

Moreover, by challenging the clear boundaries between humans and plants, the artist seeks to express a premonition: that our eugenic attitudes towards editing the bodies and sexuality of plants could reflect our own attitudes towards ourselves in the future.

 
 

本作は、植物の性と人間の身体とにまつわる、映像・音響・香料などからなるミクストメディアのインスタレーションです。
 
作品は、
《Breeding Institution》イチジクの人工受粉による電位変動を、擬似的な声として可聴化した映像と音響。
《Enamor》イチジクコバチを誘導する香りをイメージした香料。
《Ficus Brutalia》皮下組織に動物の血管を持つミュータントイチジクの彫刻。
の３要素により構成されています。

この作品でモチーフとなっているイチジクは、旧約聖書において、楽園を追放されたアダムとイブにより、彼らの恥部を隠すために使われたり、あるいはアフリカ神話のなかで、そのラテックスの樹液が精液にたとえられ、不妊治療に用いられるなど、古くから生殖や性にまつわるシンボルとして描かれてきました。

しかし、現在日本で栽培されている品種では、受粉を媒介する“イチジクコバチ”という昆虫が日本の気候では生育できないため、成熟のための受粉を必要としないように品種改良されています。（イチジクは可食部内側の小さなヒダのひとつひとつが花であり、本来はそこにコバチが侵入することで受粉します。）

作家は、それらのイチジクに性的なリハビリテーション（＝人工授粉 ）を施し、その身体に起きる不可視の事象を「植物の性的なエクスタシー」と捉え、それを映像と音響によって記述することによって、単に栽培作物という目的の内側からのみ捉えられてきた植物の身体性やセクシュアリティを、植物自身による主体的なものとして捉え直すことを目指しています。

あるいは、人間と植物との境界をあえて自明のものとしない態度によって、私たちが彼らの身体や性を自在に編集するその先に見えてくるのは、 私たち自身の未来の姿でもあるという予感をも表現しようと試みています。
