“Echoes from Clouds” is an installation consisting of video, sound, and fragrance. Inspired by Japanese economist Hirofumi Uzawa's concept of "social common capital", this work was created through research into Japan's water resource areas.
 
The video evokes the relationship between the city and nature connected by water and traces the multiple locations of water, among which the core is the water source of the northern Kanto region in Japan, and the process of how it comes to our lives in the city.
 
While showing landscapes and dams that supply us with domestic water in a spectacular way, the video captures the reality of the Anthropocene behind the romanticism. In this sense, the work shows the “physical reality” of the living space and the infrastructure that surrounds us, and implies invisible environments such as the imperceptible relationship behind the materiality and our anxiety about the unsustainability that our society and our bodies potentially have.
 
Further, the monologue about “Sansui”, an encompassing concept of nature imported from China to Japan in medieval times, questions how it is possible to think about nature beyond human perspectives.
 
The sound, remixing the onsite field recordings, also bridges nature in the distance and our life in the metropolis behind the moving images. Being immersed in the ambient sound makes us feel anxious about the future we face. And the fragrance of “artificial sterile water” indicates how we consume water in our daily life within capitalist society.

 
 
 
「Echoes from Clouds」は、映像、音、香りからなるインスタレーション作品です。
 
経済学者の宇沢弘文による「社会的共通資本」の考えに触発され、コモンズとしての水資源や、それらを取り巻く様々なエコロジーに着目しています。
 
深い霧のたちこめる人工湖から始まる映像は、水によって結ばれる都市と自然との関係性を描きながらも、同時にその背後にある、私たちの社会の非・持続可能性（unsustainability）をめぐる潜在的な不安など、不可視の予兆を描写します。映像内に繰り返し登場する霧は、人間には制御しきれない力の顕現や、荒廃の予感のようにも見えます。
 
中世に大陸から伝来した「山水」に関するモノローグは、人間の視点を超えて自然を考えることができるかどうかを問いかけます。そして霧は、やがて生活空間の中へと侵入してゆきます。
 
梅沢によるサウンドは、フィールドレコーディングをもとにしながらも、映像の指示内容からは巧妙にずらされいます。音は現実の背後にある兆候を伝えるかのように、霧のように空間に拡がります。
 
また空間内には、ダム堤内部や浄水場でのリサーチから着想された、「消毒された水の香り」も微かにただよいます。都市においてタップウォーターはもっとも身近な水の形態ですが、その記憶は、清流や湧水といったものよりもはるかに、私たちのノスタルジーを喚起させるものかもしれません。
